The Heywood Photography Exhibition

The Heywood Photography Exhibition
Photographs by Angela Christofilou co-produced with Heywood residents & Culture Co-Op
People in Heywood responded to an open call by Culture Co-op to be photographed in a local place of significance to them. Together with Leah Leaf from Culture Co-op, a panel of Heywood residents co-curated the exhibition, selecting their favourite images from my work, while each participant also contributed a personal quote.
All of the portraits were made over one weekend, spending around 20 minutes with each person / group. The final exhibition has now been installed around Heywood town and will be on display from mid-August 2025 for a few months.

Quotes from participants
ANDY
"I have lived in Heywood all my life and know many of the residents. I have been involved with many organisations and causes. I came to the Cricket Club when I was 18 with a mate of mine who played and in the 36 years I have been coming here I have been Bar Chairman, Secretary, Vice Chairman and now a Trustee. I even had my 30th here. Heywood CC is Heywood’s hidden gem, an oasis of sport, entertainment and wonderful people."
CHRIS
"We’re members of Hall Things Drama celebrating the 10th year of productions. Every penny made by our shows goes to a small charity based in Heywood. Plus I manage Sandon House one of the Heywood FAB Four Community Centres."
JOY
"My name is Joy Miller and I have lived in Heywood all my life. I volunteer in a charity shop called Little Monkeys that raises funds just for Heywood children and was set up by a local GP."
ELEANOR
"As I drive through to see my mum and dad, I’m greeted with a beautiful tunnel shaped array of trees, in the distance the leaves that have fallen are blowing across the ground and suddenly I feel free! I no longer confine, if only for a brief second! I leave the world behind me, like nothing else matters. It’s my place, a place no one can disturb me or interrupt me. A place where time does not exist and a place I feel free with no judgement."
PHIL
"I spent my first 17 years in and around Darnhill. Would be good to have a picture taken near where my Gran lived on Bankfield Close because it’s where I was first brought home as a newborn and where I’d spend evenings after school learning how to play my guitar in the spare room. The nearby access road and ginnel was the shortcut to my Mum’s house. My initials are probably still in the concrete step under my Uncle Clive’s set back in 1991! Darnhill shops is where I’d get dragged up to every other day with my Gran and Grandad. I’m in a band, The Ventrelles, four lads three of us have close ties to Heywood. We’d love to get involved with what you do and keep ties with the area as it had and still has a big part to play."
JOANNA
"The volunteers would love to be photographed for such a brilliant project. Darnhill Community Cafe and Pantry is always looking for more volunteers so hopefully someone will see the picture and come in. Everyone is welcome!"
